The marine industry in Weihai, Shandong province, has received a boost as 23 key projects were signed on June 24, in fields including tourism, logistics, new energy and material, machinery, food and bio-pharmaceuticals.

"The marine industry will be one of the most competitive and fastest-developing industries in this city," said Sun Shutao, mayor of Weihai.

With over 900 km of coastline, Weihai leads the province in the areas of fish farming, seafood processing, ship manufacturing and new energy development.

Last year, the total value in the fishery economy was 60.8 billion yuan with 2.08 million tons of aquatic products.

The shipbuilding capacity reached 2 million dead weight tons (DWTs) last year, with sales reaching 11 billion yuan.

Port throughput was 41.18 million tons and container throughput was 621,300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Last December, Weihai launched the "general plan for blue economy zone development" which outlined key marine industries, including seafood processing, port logistics, coastal tourism and new energy as areas of focus.

Meanwhile Weihai will accelerate the development of the high-tech industry area for 10 industries including medical appliances and digital control machines.

In terms of coastal new energy, 95 wind turbines for four wind power projects in Shandong Huaneng and Guohua Ruifeng have been connected to the grid.

A total of eight wind power projects with an installed capacity of 380,000 kW have been approved and are under construction.

Projects in Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Plant with a total load capacity of 10 million kW and a total investment of 150 billion yuan are underway.

There are 90 ship builders in Weihai producing over 40 kinds of ships like high-tech luxury cruise ships and ro-ro ships and exporting to over 20 countries.

It accomplished a shipbuilding scale of 913,000 DWTs in 2009, demonstrating a 75.2 percent year-on-year increase. And the city has a capacity to produce 2 million DWTs annually.

There are currently 936 seafood-processing enterprises in Weihai, 40 of which can reach an output value of 100 million yuan, with a total annual processing capacity of over 3 million tons.

The various enterprises produce at least 400 different types of products. Weihai will also work to improve its coastal tourist resources. Its tourism income is expected increase year-on-year by 15 percent.
